how to draw someone looking up
The Basic Forms
To draw the caput from whatever angle you must first sympathize its basic structure. Wait past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the confront, but when starting the drawing y'all could look even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most bones form of the caput. I apply a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Caput & Hands".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a cake as the jaw and cheek basic.
A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the head are apartment, so we can piece off a piece from both sides of the brawl. From profile, this airplane volition be a perfect circle, but when cartoon it from any other bending, it will appear to be an oval considering of perspective. Split up this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the forehead line. The summit and lesser of the oval assist y'all find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.
A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Attach the shape of the jaw. The elevation will get-go at the brow line and the back will get-go at the centre of the oval. This is a three-D volume with a front end airplane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).
Constructing From Any Angle
Step ane – Determine the bending of the brawl
The angle of the head is established at the very outset of the drawing with the ball. All three axes must be addressed:
Ten Axis - The upwardly and down tilt is established by the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Likewise, on extreme up tilts and down tilts, the thirds will exist foreshortened because of perspective.
Y Centrality - The direction the caput is turning (left or right) is established by the width of the oval. Equally the head turns towards you, you can see more of the front end of the face and less of the side, so the oval representing the side will get narrower. Similarly, when the head turns away from y'all, more of the side plane is revealed and the oval will announced wider.
Z Axis - The twist is established by the angle of the middle line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.
Step 2 – Find the thirds
After establishing the angle of the ball, divide the face into thirds. The altitude between the hairline and brow-line should exist the same equally the distance between the brow-line and bottom of the nose. Add that aforementioned distance to discover the chin. Observe how the hairline and olfactory organ-line align with the tiptop and bottom bottom of the oval when wrapped effectually the face. Imagine the head as a box. The thirds must be wrapped effectually the side plane and front end plane.
Step 3 – Add the jaw
A common error at this point is to make the jaw too long in comparison to the ball. Make sure to measure your thirds correctly and that they chronicle correctly to the ball. Discover how the shape of the jaw changes from various angles.
Stride 4 – Add the features
With this basic structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add the features in the right place. Check back for more information about specific features in a subsequently postal service.

Practise inventing the head from all possible angles. Get a sketchbook and fill up an entire page with little heads. When drawing without reference photos, yous rapidly realize where your weaknesses are because you lot tin can't rely on copying. You can simply piece of work with what you know.
